Witnessing In Secret
By Brian Price 9/27/2012

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." - Matthew 10:16

When it comes to winning souls, there is not a nation on this earth that has laws which could be used to the enemy's advantage. Even in America, the rules and laws regulating free speech actually work to the disadvantage to the gospel. One cannot go into the neighborhoods of the lost and place a gospel tract in the mail box. It's illegal. Yet, countless companies who serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but who serve money, are able to place countless ads and unwanted advertisements in our mailboxes.

But here we read the guidelines from Jesus for witnessing to the lost. Jesus said, "...be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." The incredible thing about serpents is that they can be often undetectable at times. If you ever have seen a snake in the wild, often, it is right when you are about to step on one that you see it. Why is that? Because they blend in to their environment very well.

Rattle snakes are very good at blending in with their surrounding environment, so much so that unless you hear their rattling of the tail as a warning, you might get bit without ever seeing the venomous beast. Such was the case with Paul:

"And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand." - Acts 28:3

As Christians, we are to be just like snakes: undetectable. We know that it is absolutely impossible to be completely secret without ever being made known because Jesus said there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, netiher hid that shall not be known (Luke 12:2-4). But we do have a small window of opportunity of secrecy and undetection that we can utilize to our own advantage.

The Advantage Of An Annonymous Tract
When it comes to the gospel, nothing is more effective than the printed page. Many times when I go out soul winning with my church, my companion and me will knock on anywhere from 10 - 30 doors in one hour. We may get to share the gospel with two of those doors verbally. But we give the printed gospel to almost every single one of those houses.

Just think about the Bible. It is the most widely read and distributed book in all of the world, in all of world history. Not even religious books like the Koran or the Book of Mormon have come close to having the number of people who have read the Bible. And no wonder. The Bible is the word of God. God wants people saved, so he gave us his Book. It's there for people almost anywhere in the world to read it at any given time at their pleasure. It's there for referencing and settling any issue that could possibly come up.

The advantage of having printed material is endless. Number 1, it works when you don't. You don't have to call it up, and ask if it's busy. You don't have to worry about whether people will be affected by its message because of the way it looks, or the way it smells, or dresses, or sounds by its voice. The printed material is the perfect salesman. Not only so, but the gospel tract is capable of reaching far more people than one person can. Below is an excert from the Voice of the Martyrs (persecution.com) recent newsletter:

"Kati Li manned a secret printing press hidden deep inside a cave in mainland China. To reach the press, believers had to crawl more than 30 feet through a small tunnel. Though the work was tedious, the 19 year old masterfully loaded the machine with paper, taking care to keep her fingers out of its mechanisms. In order to maintain the secrecy of the VOM- sponsored press, Kati lived in the cave for months at a time without leaving. She kept the machine printing page after page of Christian literature and even made necessary repairs to the press. Through her sacrifice, thousands of Christian books and tracts were printed for the Chinese church before the press was discovered and destroyed by police in 1992." - The Voice of the Martyrs, September/October 2012 Newsletter
Many times when the law forbids us to preach the gospel from the pulpit, we have to take desperate measures. This girl here is a perfect example. But what if you don't have a printing press? Friend, use what you have. Do you have a pen? Do you have some paper? Good, now go write a tract and give it someone. Or write Jesus is God on it, and lay it out somewhere. Write a Bible verse. You can probably write 30 Bible verses with a small message of salvation on it in one day. That's 30 tracts with a small gospel message per day, or 10,950 souls reached with the gospel in one year.

Peter said, "We ought to obey God rather than men." - Acts 5:29. Many times, because of fear of men, I have used a gosepl tract to reach someone as opposed to using my mouth. And I am very glad that I have. The tract is so easy to use, anyone can do it. A little child can walk up to someone, hand them a tract, and that person will be able to hear for the first time that Jesus loves them. Or by putting in the bathroom, someone is bound to read it when they are alone in that stall with nothing to read except that tract.

Friend, if we do not reach the lost with the gospel, then the atheists, or the Muslims, or whatever other religious or non-religious group will reach them with their own propaganda. Someone else will get them before us. We cannot let the Jehovah's witnesses beat us to the punch. We cannot allow the Mormons to reach the lost before us. We cannot allow the disobedient and the deceivers in the world to beguile the unstable souls. We must open their eyes with the gospel of truth.

And the way to do that is with the printed page. The pen truly is mightier than the sword. It was said on the old movie Ben Hur, "How do you fight an idea? With another idea!"

Friend, there are some wrong ideas out there in this world, and we must wage a war to put another idea in the minds of men. This Idea is not some man-made concocted thing, but rather it is the truth of God - The Holy Bible.

Millions of souls have been deceived because just some man in this world wrote a book titled "The God Delusion." Do you have any idea what the consequences will be? Just imagine a world that hates God, and hates Christians. If we are not already living in that world right now, then friend, wait just another few years. You will see how God-hating books like this one will change the hearts and lives of people world-wide...

But friend, it does not have to be that way. Remember the parable of the tares. Jesus said that an enemy has sown tares in the Son of man's field. The devil is working really hard to corrupt the minds of men with his own "Bible". He has many Bibles and false Christs in this world. If we let him alone, he's just going to plant more and more children of wickedness. We must be busy. We must wield our pen, our sword, our most powerful weapon on earth to put peace in the hearts of men, and to put peace on earth.

You want to see souls saved?

Write a gospel tract.

You want to see people in heaven?

Write an internet blog.

You want to see truth abound, and your children live in a free country?

Write a book.

If you don't think you have the wit or the intelligence or the theological training to do any of the three above examples, then print, buy, and distribute the material from the one who does have the theological intelligence.

I know that I see life through a pair of high powered lenses because someone printed Christian material using their own $50 ink jet printer, and put into my hands something that they found useful from off of the internet.

Thank God for that.

It's not that hard. Just find the material you like, print it out, and hand it to someone. Or leave it on a park bench, or a car window, or put it on someone's door step. Wherever someone will find it and read it. That girl in China we read about printed thousands of Christian literature and influenced someone's life. I guarantee that.

"Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus." - Acts 8:35

Notice that when the apostle Philip preached to the eunuch, he used the scriptures. He used printed material that he had on hand, and he used it to preach to that Ethopian eunuch. That eunuch then finished his journey back to Ethopia, and more than likely preached the gospel there, planting churches in his country.

Friend, we must use printed material. When Jesus was tempted by the devil, Jesus quoted the scriptures, which is printed material. Printed material has its advantages. You must see that.

The whole purpose behind my very own website is so that someone would be able to type something into the online search engines, and find what he is looking for -- Jesus Christ.

Notice that this entire website is printed material. It is written. It works when I sleep. It witnesses when I can't. It preaches where I'm not allowed. And it will live on after I am dead.

I suggest that you do the same. The point is, simply do something. Whatever you do, preach the gospel.

If You Died Today, Would You Go To Heaven?
