We Will Never Get Rid of Temptation
By Rich Techson 10/3/2013

Matthew chapter 4

"1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him."

This study is based on my interpretation of this particular passage. Mat 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

God allows the devil to tempt us to see how strong we are or how proud we are. He is with us. Just like Job (Job 2:4-10), the devil petitioned that he may tempt and destroy Job in order for his faith to be tested. The devil sought it for destruction because he is the father of all destruction (Joh 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.) and a roaring lion looking for his next prey(1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:).

Jesus gave us a scripture to abide by when we are tempted (Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.) and gave us the authority over the principalities of the world (Eph 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:). Jesus fasted not because he needed it although he is also the Son of Man, but because he needed to show us as an example of what we ought to do as Christians when we go through areas of our weakness (Heb 2:18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted).

We will never overcome temptation or get rid of it alone. As believers in Christ, we must with all the strength that God gave us to resist all temptation (Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh) (Jas 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you) (1Co 6:18-19 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?)

Just look at Joseph when the wife of Potiphar plead with him to go into her but he refused and ran away(Genesis 39:7-20)( 1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it) For us, we need to avoid anything that might excite those urges or allow any room for the devil to have his way with us.

We are not sons of this world (1Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world), but sons of God (Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus). The world lusts after the flesh (Jas 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed) (1Jn 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever). Although sin brings pleasure, it is nothing but momentary.

Sins produce destruction that leads to death (Jas 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death). We are prone to sin everywhere we turn e.g. internet, television, magazines, scandalous women. Temptation is easy to succumb into, but when we are caught it destroy our relationship with God and the people around us (Mat 6:22-23 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!)

Mat 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

Jesus commanded that we fast(1Co 7:5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency). There are instances or condition that doesn’t go away by just simply praying briefly or talking to anyone. Sins that completely have its grip on us, anything that constrict us from doing what got call us to do, the one that binds and constrict us from living a righteous and holy life before God (Mar 9:29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting).

Mat 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Our faith is built upon the word of God (Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.) and the assembling together as what we are doing today. Strengthen our brethren so when we fall into diverse temptations (Jas 1:2-3 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience). The word of God is the light upon us (Psa 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.). His word will penetrate all manner of sins and gives us a reality check. The word will be our food so when the devil whisper to us his lies we will be able to counteract with the Sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;). Our appetite for sin is insatiable. We will never satisfy the wants of our flesh. It will require us to go out our way of serving God and to step away our relationship with our loved ones. We must remain vigilant at all cost, putting away every idle thing that can hinder our walk with God. He desires for us to remain in His presence to love and devote our time with Him. We must find our secret place. God call us to be a leader; therefore, we must live like one.

Mat 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

“God is Light” (Psa 43:3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.)( Joh 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.)( 1Jn 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.)

Mat 4:18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

Obedience to God is abandoning what we have and completely following Him(Mat 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.). If we want to become the disciples of Christ we must have the heart to serve and be committed to Him and no other (Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.). We may be tried and still have the hardships of life, but God will take care of us when we are in the bottom. We must strive to live for Him no matter what. It is a daily surrender to His will that we will find freedom from the bondage of sin.
