The Scribes And Pharisees
by Brian P. 8/13/09

"Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation." - Luke 20:46-47
The Lord Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of his day more so than any other group of people. It has been said before that the Pharisees were the fundamentalists of their day. It was the scribes and Pharisees that put Jesus on the cross. They claimed to know God, but in their works they denied him. They claimed to be students of the Bible, but were far from its teachings.
"This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me." - Matthew 15:8
The Lord described them as whited sepulchres which indeed appear beautiful on the outside, but within are full of dead men's bones. He said that even so, they outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within they were full of all hypocrisy and iniquity.

It was the Dominican monks, the Catholic priests, bishops, cardinals, and popes that put the Christians to death all throughout the middle ages. All throughout the inquisition, it was these men who shed the blood of those who truly loved Jesus. The Lord Jesus said that they would do these things to the Christians because "... they have not known the Father, nor me," (John 16:3).

This is such a serious subject, that Jesus devoted an entire chapter to rebuking religious men who are outwardly righteous, but inwardly wicked. Wolves in sheeps clothing as he called them:

"1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord."
- Matthew chapter 23

The Bible foretold of the Roman Catholic Church, more than two hundred years before it was even brought about by Constantine around 310A.D. And we can see how in our day, nearly 1,700 years later, Vatican city still fits into the Bible's prophecy.

"And the woman was arrayed in purple and *scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication..." - Revelation 17:4

*scarlet = red

A friend of mine once told me about some particular precious stones that Vatican city has. He said that just one small stone cost $10,000. Just ONE. And he said that they had a whole bathroom made up of these things. He said that the bathroom cost approximately 400 MILLION dollars. Notice the scripture says that the woman was decked with gold (like the tombs of the popes) and precious stones (like this bathroom). A bathroom built on widows houses. Poor souls are told to pay the church in order to get their loved ones out of Purgatory. When in fact, Purgatory is really hell! There is no getting out of hell. When giving the parable of the rich man who went to hell, Jesus said these words when quoting Abraham, "And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence," (Luke 16:26).

"And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration." - Revelation 17:6
The Bible does not say that the woman merely tasted the blood of the saints, it says that she was DRUNKEN with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And if you look at history, through reading books like Martyr's Mirror and Foxe's Book of Martyrs, you can truly comprehend why Vatican city is drunken with the blood of Christians. The Catholic Church masscred thousands, perhaps even millions, of Christians all in the name of God.

The following is an excert from Foxe's Book of Martyrs, Chapter 6, An Account of the Persecutions in Italy, Under the Papacy:

"This armed multitude being encouraged by the Roman Catholic bishops and monks fell upon the Protestants in a most furious manner. Nothing now was to be seen but the face of horror and despair, blood stained the floors of the houses, dead bodies bestrewed the streets, groans and cries were heard from all parts. Some armed themselves, and skirmished with the troops; and many, with their families, fled to the mountains. In one village they cruelly tormented one hundred and fifty women and children after the men were fled, beheading the women, and dashing out the brains of the children. In the towns of Vilario and Bobbio, most of those who refused to go to Mass, who were upwards of fifteen years of age, they crucified with their heads downwards; and the greatest number of those who were under that age were strangled."
This quotation does not even scratch the surface of the horrors of Rome's persecution of the children of God. And did you know that the Holy Office of Inquisition still exists today? Alberto Rivera, an ex-Jesuit priest has borne witness to the fact that the Vatican has so much of a sway in our political regimes that almost every nation under heaven has the hand of Rome up their butt.

"And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." - Revelation 17:18

The Bible says that the woman is a personification of a city that sits on seven hills. What other city has a name, Vatican, which actually means, "The Old Woman of Prophecy" or "City of Prophecy?" And what other city but Rome sits on seven hills?

"The historic centre of Rome was built on seven hills: the Aventine Hill, the Caelian Hill, the Capitoline Hill, the Esquiline Hill, the Palatine Hill, the Quirinal Hill, and the Viminal Hill." -, article titled "ROME"
Hmmm..... Sounds familiar. Sounds like something the Bible says!

"And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth." - Revelation 17:9

*Notice the golden cup in the woman's hand. The woman represents the Roman Catholic faith.

"...having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication." - Revelation 17:4

Dear friend, if you love Jesus, come out of this church. Just because a mouse is in a cookie jar, that doesn't make it a cookie, now does it? And just because a church may say they are Christian, that doesn't mean that it is. The true church of God exists without walls.

"12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
13 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.
14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come."
- Hebrews 13:12-14
