Martha, Why Are You Troubled?
By Brian Price 11/10/2013

"And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." - Luke 10:41-42

Oh Martha, why are you so cumbered about? Why are you so troubled? When will you sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to his word? We read here in Luke chapter 10 about how two sisters had two different priorities. One preferred to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to his word. While the other was busy with things around the house. She was so troubled about getting things done that she went so far as to press the Lord to get Mary to help. But notice how kind Jesus was to her. He responded with such careful and kind consideration when he said, "Martha, Martha...." His words seem to always bring a person back to reality, do they not? Martha, why are you troubled? It was as if he was telling her come and sit down beside Mary and listen. Those of you with little children know what its like when you try to get your children to sit down when it's time to read the Bible. One child will be over here doing something. Another will be over there trying to focus on another thing. And perhaps there is another child who is sitting, and ready to listen to Mommy or Daddy read the Bible to them. That is what Mary was doing. She was sitting down, and listening to Jesus. Friend, do you know of any sweeter times than when you sat down and listened to the words of Jesus? Remember his kindness? His mercy? His gentleness? When was the last time you sat at his feet and listened to his word? Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things, but one thing is needful. That one thing that is needful is to come and sit down and listen to Jesus.
