Being Religious Is Not Enough
By Brian Price 7/11/2013

"6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." - Mark 7:6-7

Here we read of the prophecy of Isaiah in which God called the people hypocrites for being religious on the outside, but total reprobates on the inside. Israel in those days was known for having its extravagant Temple, its handsomely apparal'ed priests, and its renown holy Book. But the people who enjoyed such religious advantages were nothing more than haters of the God they were supposed to serve. Notice how Jesus says that their heart is far from him. Too often are people interested only in the outward appearance of religion, and totally uninterested in the benefits of religion on the inside. Perhaps going to church for them was the norm. It was normal to get dressed and look their best for Sunday. But come Monday, hell or high water, God would be forgotten by sunrise. Why is it that people only use God when it's convenient? Where is the true penance? Where is the contrition? Why is everyone feasting when God has called us to mourn? It is perhaps because they don't truly know God at all. And finally notice in verse 7 that it says that they teach for doctrines the commandments of men. What ever happened to the commandments of God? These people were so preoccupied with church traditions and Bible commentaries that they completely ignored the Bible itself. They were too busy worrying about what so-and-so says in his book as opposed to what God says in his book. Where are the true followers of Jesus?
