Beware of False Prophets
by Brian Price 7/21/2010

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." - Matthew 7:15

About 6 years ago, I married a young lady, who I will call Susan for sake of confidentiality. Her mother was a true fundamental baptist. She knew the Bible better than any Christian I can think of at this point, with the exception of Dr. John Goetsch. He is the Executive Vice President of West Coast Baptist College. My mother-in-law probably knew the Bible about as good as him or Dr. Jack Van Impe. Well maybe not THAT good, but it seemed like she was pretty close to it. If any of you know who these men are, then you know that they can practically quote any book of the Bible with about as much effort as you and I use when we simply take a seat in a chair.

It's been said that those who crucified Jesus were the fundamentalists of their day. I take this saying to heart most definitely because my mother-in-law was a true fundamentalist. You could say that she was an Independent, Fundamental, King-James-only Baptist. Indeed, I consider my own self this. But she was probably more of a Baptist than me. She knew things that preachers with doctorates only knew of. Although she had not an ounce of Bible college underneath her belt, I think the only knowledge she actually lacked in the Christian faith was the knowledge of speaking Greek and Hebrew.

As unfortunate as this may sound (and truly it is unfortunate), my mother-in-law persecuted me severely. She has almost succeeded in my admission to a mental hospital. In fact, she said these words to me in March of 2006 when my wife and me were still married, "If I could rip your wife and your daughter out of your arms and lock you up in a mental hopsital, I WOULD!!!" There's a verse in the Bible that says, "Moving his lips, he bringeth evil to pass." - Proverbs 16:30.

Ex-Wife (left) and Mother-In-Law (right)
"Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit..." - Proverbs 28:10

For 4 years, I have battled the devastations that my mother-in-law's persecutions have left in my life. I lost my wife and daughter. My mother-in-law convinced my wife that I was trailer trash, and I was a terrible father. She separated from me in 2006, and the divorce was final in 2008. Of course, there was a list of false accussations against me. And to this day, my wife (now ex) refuses to speak peaceably with me because of her belief that I am such an awful person. If you know anything about character assassination, it literally takes years, or sometimes an entire lifetime to recover from it. Many times, however, one's character is gone forever. Hence the term "assassination." It is exactly what the devil tries to do in the life of a believer.

"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, WHICH ACCUSED THEM BEFORE OUR GOD DAY AND NIGHT." - Revelation 12:10

And so now I think that the devil has bruised my heel. But thank God that his word promises me that I'll bruise his head! As Paul said, "But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel..." Philippians 1:12.

Whereas before, I would have been a preacher or a missionary, now I cannot. I am disqualified among the Baptist churches for church leadership because of my divorce. As I said, I think the devil has bruised my heel. But after looking on my life, I see that the harder the devil has tried to destroy my life, the brighter the gospel light has shined. To date, I have seen my current internet ministry grow in internet traffic that I never thought would happen. God has also given me a great witnessing ministry with passing out Chick tracts, and doing door-to-door witnessing. All of which may not have been so easily done if I were still married to Susan.

But you know, I think many of the persecutions and heart ache I have experienced in my life could have been avoided had I known and heeded the warning which Jesus gives about false prophets. He says to beware of them. In one regard, you could compare this "beware" to that of bewaring of a snake nearby. Certainly, if you were walking down a path and chanced upon a viper on the path, you would beware of the venemous beast, and stay clear away from it. Had I listened to my gut feelings about my own mother-in-law (whom I loved very dearly) being a serpent, I might have steered clear from her, taking my family far away from her. But such was not the case. She took a bite into our marriage, and her poison infected us all.

Though I do blame my ex-mother-in-law quite a bit, I do not totally blame her for Susan's own sin. As with Eve and the devil, Susan was deceived to take of the fruit of divorce by her mother, but she still was to blame for disobeying God. As a result, she has suffered some consequences. But thankfully God is still merciful and has given her a second chance. She is now happily remarried.

As for me, God has also been gracious and has blessed me with a wonderful second wife.

My dear Christian friend, beware of false prophets. Who is a false prophet, you might ask? He could be a church leader. My mother-in-law was the head of an American homeschooling group in Germany. She spoke many times to families in churches. She was very influential. Take for example Kenneth Copeland. A classic example. Notice the following prophecy he gives in regard to America:

Kenneth Copeland Showing Devil Signal

The United States Will Not Fail
Yes, Lord. Thank You. I repent for that in the name of Jesus. Thank you for forgiving me. Praise God. Praise the Name of the Lord Jesus.
"Give forth praise and honor and understand this," saith the Lord. "It is not time for the United States to fail. It is not time for this nation to collapse financially. It is not time for this nation to fold up spiritually, and go the way the rest of the world has gone in the past, or the way the world is trying to drag her down in this (inaudible). No sir. No, ma'am. It is not that time. I'll tell you what time it is," saith the Lord. "It is time right now for this nation's greatest hour, its greatest spiritual outpouring, its greatest financial blessing. It is time now because it's My time," saith the Lord Jesus Christ. "It is your time and together we'll see it come to pass. You mark My words," saith the Lord. Hallelujah!

How can people actually believe this? God's word clearly states the EXACT OPPOSITE of what he just prophesied! Please note the following facts about America:
1. We have forgotten God.
- No longer is the Bible read in public schools, neither is Jehovah's name invoked upon through prayer.
- Atheism permeates our society, our education, our magazines, and our government.

2. Our country is extremely sexually immoral.
- Homosexuality is no longer in the closet. It's naked and out on our streets.
- Adultery is the norm. Nobody cares if you sleep with your neighbour's wife.
- Pornography has become so bad that it has literally destroyed lives.

3. We shed innocent blood.
- Abortion has claimed more lives than the Holocaust.
- Crime is up by 900% since 1963, the year they took prayer out of schools.

4. Our nation has forsaken God for those which are no gods.
- Covetousness and greed has replaced the Almighty.
- We love and worship movie stars, music stars, and political figures.

5. Shepherds have eaten up God's flock instead of feeding them.
- They devour widows houses through their health and wealth preaching propoganda.
- They teach things which they ought not for filthy lucre (money).
- They prophesy falsely things which God did not command them. They prophesy out of their own hearts.

"Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?" - Jeremiah 5:9

God is highly displeased with America. We had a great beginning. But I don't believe our end will be so great. Take a look at this most interesting portion of scripture:
"30 ...The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD."
- Jeremiah 25:30-31
The Bible is refering to the Great Tribulation. God is going to pour out his wrath on every nation, which includes America. No one is going to escape all these things except those Christians taken in the Rapture.
"21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened."
- Matthew 24:21-22
Only time will tell whose words will truly stand. Copeland's or the Bible's. When God gave his law to Israel, this is what he prescribed his people in order to test the prophet to see if he is legitamit.
"20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."
- Deuteronomy 18:20-22

Jesus said that there would be many on Judgment Day who will plead for mercy on the basis that they prophesied in Jesus' name. He said that he would say to them that he never knew them. Which means, he literally never knew who they were because they never truly knew him.

"21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
- Matthew 7:21-23
So don't be deceived little flock. Not everyone that prophesies in the name of Jesus is sent from God. Sometimes these prophets are false and they prophesy lies out of their own heart. I am almost certain that the majority of them do it for money. Peter said that through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you (2 Peter 2:3). Which means that they would make money off of you through the things that they teach. Sounds kind of like Trinity Broadcasting Network, doesn't it? "If you want God's blessing in your life, you need to name it and claim it! Glory to God!" My friend, God does not necessarily want your money. He wants your heart.
